Bexley, Beach Shelters

Flying structures resembling the playful flights of kites were proposed for the reconstruction of the Bexhill beach’s kiosk and shelters. Taking the seafront, the site context and the wind direction as the starting point for the design, the concept for a group of structures modelled on paper folded planes was developed. The opportunity to create varied folds lent to the idea of a family of structures where the kiosk would be the primary head. The orientation of the structures along the shore had each ‘propeller’ facing the west, conceptually poised for flight whilst practically providing shelter against the westerly winds.
